Learn some fun and beautiful Junk Journal Cover Ideas for Altered Books and Handmade Journals. You won’t want to miss it. Today we will play and work further with the pretty cover of our altered book. Yesterday we created some things on the back, but after we finished I added a few things to the front cover. A larger piece of the napkin was added, and I did some more stenciling with the molding paste, followed by watercolors on top. Please scroll down to view the video.
Let’s address molding paste here. I generally use Golden brand paste. Depending on the amount that you apply for depth, it can take an hour or more for it to dry. It should be completely dry before painting over it.

Stenciled on the lower part of the front cover is a smaller amount of paste than on the top. Considerably more embossing is on the top. The paste dries light (not white) and opaque, so we will add a bit of color to it. Lightly brushing over the paste with watercolor produces a mild result, but I have decided to use acrylic paint for a more pronounced effect by rubbing it with my finger, especially on the area at the bottom of the page that isn’t raised as high.
Now we will add some additional elements. First we do a little stamping with black ink. Dabbing around the edges helps for an aged look. The second stamp is working a little better as you see. Now we set the clear lettered word ‘altered’ onto an acrylic stamp block, apply ink, and stamp next to the bird. That worked great. Yay!
For the final step today, part of a paper bag is used to gently sand and smooth out any little bumps, along with removal of dust or dirt particles that might be on the surface of the cover. That will finish things for today!
