Today we will be working on our Gilded Junk Journal Book Cover with a bird, birdcage, and butterfly. We will be addressing options for the inside front and back of the book cover as well. I have added some Golden Accents to the cover as you can see; just another little embellishment to enhance it a bit. A nifty hack! Please scroll down to view the video. Thank you.
Gilded Junk Journal Book Cover
We will work on the spine and back of the book cover first. Centering the ruler on the spine by finding the title, I set it square on title and draw a straight line with my watercolor pencil to use as a guide for lining up my stencil. Using blue tape for protection underneath, the brush is tapped over the word ‘enchant’ on the stencil since that it the title for the cover. That turned out quite well!
Next we tap the brush with remaining paint around various places on the cover. We will now dip the back of the brush into one of my favorite colors, beautiful Treasure gold. It works great on books and book pages. Each dip produces about three dots that we apply as you see on video. Then I put some on my finger and rub on the stencil and other areas for a nice embellishment. Make sure you don’t rub excessively or for too long as it can change the structure of the paint. We finish by putting a little on the butterfly and bird. The raised areas from stenciling are accented even more, and a 3D effect becomes further enhanced.
Now we move to the inside of the front and back covers. Again, there are several options to consider. You can just leave these pages blank as a canvass for you to create, age the edges, or look at other options. I have gessoed and painted the pages white, and decided to place a favorite picture from the “Once upon a Time” matchbook.
Now let’s see what we’ve done with some of the inside pages. I have whited out some areas that I will apply clear gesso to so that there will be perfect places for writing and journaling. I’m still thinking about what to do with some of the back pages, but we will wrap things up for today. I hope you will keep your contagious creativity in motion and that you are enjoying learning and having fun!
