Lettering 5 Ways – Letter A
Today we are going to draw, brush, and freestyle letters along with some simple collage ones. We will be using a gel pen, mechanical pencil, number 8 flat brush with liquid (fluid) acrylics, and a calligraphy pen. Some paper scraps will be utilized to make a collage. I will be turning these letters into a printable for you. We will also take these letters and put them on some of the tags we made this week.
The first letter is a drawn one, which came from the Hand Lettering Made Easy book. We will go with the ‘Karina’ lettering style for this ‘A.’ Following the tutorial, you can see that we draw a couple of hourglass type shapes with two lines and swirls to create this style of the letter. Found in the Beginners Guide to Lettering book is the brush letter we are using here. Loading the brush with paint, we simply draw two lines with curved ends plus an easy curved line in the center. Holding the brush at an angle produces the wide areas, giving it dimension.
Modern Mark Making is the next book we’ll use for the calligraphy letter. I really love this book. As you see, a calligraphy pen should be held at a 45 degree angle on the tip. Following the six steps shown creates another nice letter. Again, we have the wider sections of the letter for depth.
Now let’s dive in to the collage. Using only random scrap pieces of paper, we see how there are multiple ways that they can be placed together to form a fun ‘A.’ No need to put too much thought on this one; just “go with the flow.” Fun!! For our final letter ‘A,’ we go back to the Modern Mark Making book. This letter type is called “casual script maguscules.” Our gel pen is is the tool we are using here, as we practice casual script writing. A triangle shape with curvy, swirly sides along with a curvy center line with a tiny center cross line is the technique used here. Then we fill in areas of the letter as before.
Now that we have a little practice under our belt, we can follow the different letter styles from the sketchbook and apply each one to a tag to add another splendid embellishment to them. We finish with glue sticking a collage ‘A’ to a tag. I hope you had as much fun as I did on this project, and remember that I’m also learning new techniques with each project along with you as we move forward on our creative junk journaling journey!
