Quick DIY Window Hack for Junk Journals Pages
Want to know how to create a faux hole or window in a junk journal, altered book, or paper art. A quick portal or window hack. This is so cool your junk journals, altered books, paper crafting. Mixed Media at its most fun. You won’t want to miss it.
Cereal Box vs Chipboard Hack
In today’s tutorial we are taking a cereal box and running it through a die cut machine. A Cricut will work or you can buy them (die cuts), but I don’t like to spend a lot and die cuts can be pricey. Good quality brushes, mediums, and sometimes an upscale tool is worth paying a little more for. I’m using a book wrap cover that has a cute cat, women, and a tree; And I love the words on it… The hack here is that a cereal box is being used as the chip board. As you see in tutorial, I am looking for the right size opening for each image. Simply make sure that the cut out is large enough to cover your chosen frame opening. Set your piece on something like an old catalogue or phone book that you can cover your piece with glue stick, then turn the page for your next piece. Then we cut out our frame for the chosen piece that it works well with and glue it on. Next cut the excess paper off that is around the outside of your frame so that it is even with it.
Shoe Polish as a Distress Tool
Another hack is my favorite way to age (distress) a page using plain old shoe polish on a brush. Rub some on scrap piece of paper first to prevent smudging. Then darken the edges of the frame with it. We have now created a nice new portal for the book! Now cut a larger piece of paper if you wish as seen in the video from old receipts, tickets, pictures, ledgers, etc. to glue the portal on. I like to set it at an angle for some asymmetry. Age that paper also. I like to brush some polish around the outer area of the front along with the edges as you see. For the final step I like to distress the book page a bit around the portal. Done!
