Acrylic Paint Tips, Tricks, and Hacks
Learn to use acrylic paint 🎨 on the pages of an altered book 📚 or Junk Journal. Hints, tips, tricks, hacks included.
In today’s tutorial we are going to paint some pages. This is one of my personal favorite junk journaling endeavors! We are going to expand on what we did yesterday with gesso. For this tutorial, Folk art brand paints are ideal, and I think you will love them as I do. It is good practice to set a protective paper like a magazine page below the paper being painted to protect paper underneath from paint marks. (I show this a little out of order later in the video.) When using acrylic paint, you need some water on your brush. Notice how I gently place the brush head on a rag after wetting it to leave just the right amount of moisture. Keep a rag or baby wipe in one hand if needed for clean up. Any sort of brush can be used; flat, angled, or whatever works best for you.

How to Use Acrylic Paint on Altered Book Pages
I prefer to go light to dark with paints. Leave some open spaces on the page. for contrast. If you apply too much paint, dab it with your cloth before it dries, which takes about 30-40 seconds. You can see that I am re-dipping my brush before going from yellow to brown color. Lightly Rubbing the paint onto the page helps to settle well. We are aging the outer edges today with the brown paint, dabbing and quickly softening by rubbing with a finger. Shoe polish actually works best for me though. After painting I like to place a small piece of non-stick paper to the painted page, then clip it along with several other pages to keep it flat as it dries. Notice how beautifully highlighted the darker brown paint that was rubbed in is.
