Learn to make Dyed and Aged Journaling Cards for Junk Journals, Altered Books Tutorial
We continue today on our junk journaling journey with a tutorial about journaling cards. These lovely, wonderful cards are designed to put in secret, personalized tuck spots in our altered books and junk journals, that provides the reader time to pause and write their thoughts. Index cards are a favorite hack of mine. We have two hand made ones here; one is tea stained and the other is avocado dyed. In a future tutorial we will ‘go into the kitchen’ to learn how to actually make the dyes. Avocado produces a lovely pinkish color that I really love.
Dyed & Aged Journaling Cards for Junk Journals
First I am using a corner rounder to clip the corners. As we always do with our junk journaling projects, we next age (distress) the edges of the paper. Simple but very important. Everyone loves the aging look! As in my other junk journaling projects, shoe polish is the choice for distressing by swirling with a brush. On the darker card I like to use extra polish. As you see I like to age both sides.
By the way, if using an oil or other ‘base’ paint, baby oil works great. It’s a good idea to continue to use the same brush with similar applications. Next we will look at faux stitching our cards. Using my Tombow ink and ruler, lines are marked following scales on the ruler. You can apply real stitching by hand or with sewing machine as well. Lastly, the cards are slipping into your customized pockets.
This project, like all of your special junk journaling projects, is not a competition about how fast you can go. “Slow wins the race” with journaling! It’s all about “contagious creativity” today, and as we move forward!
