How to Make Tiny Library Pockets for Junk Journals
Welcome to day 20 in our junk journaling journey. Mixed media is a visual art form that provides a variety of media in a single art work. Example: If we draw on a surface with ink and highlight with paint or water colors, then draw over with pastels, chalk, or colored pencils, that becomes mixed media.
We are exploring form today. As an art fundamental, the form refers to its shape. What we are working with here has lots of form since it has good movement and play along with many surfaces. Importantly, it has gone from a 2D piece of paper to a 3D art form. Form also includes volume, which is either 3 dimensional or perceived. The idea of form is a fairly general term, but is important for all 2D and 3D art forms. With mixed media, we learn to imagine art beyond the 2 dimensions with our paper, canvases, and other surfaces.
We will be working with our little matchbook that we made recently. Ive cut out a bunch of little things from two Graphic 45 books. The crafting paper from them provides the “punch” of orange color that we are looking for. Let’s look at the match work now from lesson 18. There is a lot going on here with this piece. I have cut out some bits and pieces. Now it will be sort of like putting a puzzle together, but since we are using the same product line there will be continuity here. Glueing some little label stickers to to the match work, we next age the edges a bit and round the corners. Then we add a little decorative tape for reinforcement along scored areas. A “Once Upon a Time” piece will be used as a splendid cover. It is centered and glued in place as you see.
This matchbook is going to tell a story of The Beauty and the Beast. A pocket is now being made to hold the “Beauty and the Beast” cards. I’ve decided to use a curved shaped cutter for a rounded pocket on this one. It is taped in place then burnished. As always, I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial and love making your own special creations from what you have learned!
