Create Altered Book Hideaway Places
Welcome to day 23 of our junk journaling journey. Today we will create a space in our altered book to hold the little Once Upon a Time book. First we find the right size frame sections that will be used. What we want to do is cut a hole in the page and use the frame to support it. I have found a place in the book where two pages are glued together on one side, and two glued together on the other side, separated by a center section where three pages have been removed. This leaves ample room for the booklet to rest. The reinforcement provided by glued pages will be needed to hold the little booklet.
I want to make sure that the cut (slit) made in the paper doesn’t extend to the lower pages, so I place a protective barrier between the two sets of joined pages. Setting the metal ruler in place, we make several passes with a craft knife until the paper is cut through.
In the next step, another cut is made slightly lower than the first one to create a small rectangular opening, but large enough to easily slide the booklet into without tearing the paper. To reinforce this cut, we will use two pieces from our frame to be glued over and under the it. On the back, some decorative tape will suffice.
To prevent the sides of the opening from tearing, two pieces of tape are set before the frame sections are glued on. I decide to set two shorter frame sections under each side frame pieces to cover the tape. (Tip: If you are left with a little excess glue, a pencil eraser works great to remove it as as shown.) The book fits in perfectly. Yay!! Now we can join the two sets of pages together by placing glue only along the edges, since we need room for the booklet. Burnish the pages well. When dry we have another amazing junk journal project completed that we love!
