Carve Stamps to Print without a Press in Your Own Studio
Today we are going to be printing without a press. I hope that you will be as excited as I am to see how easy it is to create something so nice and pretty! I love to do this. And by the way, all of the styrofoam used will be recycled. Be prepared for this project being a little messy, but loads of fun. We begin by making cut outs from plain old styrofoam boxes. We will also use some of the pages from an altered book, along with a container with water and a little scrub brush . I have drawn some free form patterns to show you here. We are using just the handle from a brush to draw on the styrofoam cutout. Drawing freeform designs, make pretty deep grooves but be careful not to press too hard to prevent tearing.
Using a small brayer for rolling, roll into a small batch of acrylic paint on a paper plate. Then roll paint thoroughly over your patterns. You don’t want to press too hard. Set a piece of paper over your template, then press and slide over with a flat device such as a clip or card, We have already completed the first task! As you can see, paint can be added again and the process repeated as many times as you wish. T o modify the pattern, avoid adding paint on your next press.
I accidentally learned today from dropping my styrofoam in the pan of water, that taking it out and pressing on a piece of paper will leave another distinct result. Sometimes we have good accidents! Rubbing the excess paint off with your brush will enable use of the template again. The next template has only dashed straight lines, yet the roller still leaves an interesting pattern. We end with taking the blue leaves print and pressing it onto the lined template to create another unique look. Play, experiment, and create however you wish! Enjoy!
