Today we will Learn How To Create a Fine Paper Pieced Collage Bird! This can be used in all your Junk Journaling and Mixed Media techniques. We are adding a bird to our art. Some say that art can be enhanced by “just adding a bird!” Funny but perhaps true. Please scroll down to view the video tutorial.
Fine Paper Pieced Collage Bird
Isn’t he a cute little bird? I love him. First I traced the outline of the bird, then the outline of the feathers and the branch he is sitting on. The page that I am working with was gessoed and painted light blue as you see.
I started this project by finding a good scrap background paper to use for the bird. This paper is set on thicker card stock paper, which works best for this project. Clamp the scrap paper to the card stock as shown. All of the little feathers need to be cut out. Not to panic though. I have given you the template so you can cut your feathers out of cool papers. Keep the outline pieces as well. Make your template, cut the pieces out, and glue them onto the bird like a puzzle.
Next I will use a soft charcoal pencil and put the outline sections in place, which will essentially become tracing paper. Now we can accurately draw tree branches around the little bird for him to sit on. I also hole punched the dark part of his eye out and used it to stencil on his eyeball. The beak I just drew freehand.
Now I will glue him down with the strong adhesive glue Fabri-Tac and burnish. With a graphite pencil, I accentuate all of the feathers and around his head. I now accent his claws with graphite. With a dab of white paint and a tiny brush I gently tap a bit on his eye to make it ‘pop.’ Adding some lines to the branches with charcoal and rubbing lightly adds a nice touch. The last step is to create a protective seal over the charcoal and graphite. This brings me to another favorite hack. Instead of using more costly fixative, hairspray also does the trick.
